Prairie Park Nature Center

100-acre nature preserve on the east side of Lawrence, KS. The preserve features a five-acre lake, as well as wetland, woodland, and prairie environments. Visitors may walk the trails to see a wide variety of native Kansas wildlife and plants.

Lawrence Mountain Bike Trails
The park entrance and parking lot is just off 8th & Oak streets in North Lawrence.
The River Trails are a city park in North Lawrence maintained almost exclusively by LMBC volunteers. This very popular trail is used by bikers and runners year round. The 9-mile loop has separate marked entrances for bicycles and pedestrians, directing each group on their appropriate one-way loop. Bicycles should take the clockwise route.

Burroughs Creek Trail

Take a hike through history along the Burroughs Creek Trail. The 1.7 mile paved trail is part of the Lawrence Loop and features panels that provide insight into Lawrence's unique history and cultural identity. Bike friendly with two breweries, parks, and community gardens along the way.

The Audio-Reader Sensory Garden
1120 W. 11th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044
The Sensory Garden on the grounds of the Baehr Audio-Reader Center waits to welcome guests with its flowers, herbs, and accessories designed to delight the senses. Plants with intriguing textures such as Lamb's Ear can be felt with your hands and are intermingled with the delightfully fragrant leaves of mint and lavender. Wind chimes ring in the breeze and join with the chirping of birds as they visit the many feeders along the tree-covered path. This garden is fully accessible.

Japanese Friendship Garden
North side of Watkins Community Museum at 1045 Massachusetts Street
The Japanese Friendship Garden, approximately 90 feet across and 92 feet deep, contains a Wisteria covered arbor walkway, an arbor house, large rocks, water and imaginative lighting. Plantings included Japanese maples, yoshino cherry trees, yews, bamboo, juniper, and mugho pines as well as azaleas, spirea, viburnum, Siberian iris, and peonies. The Japanese Friendship Garden provides Lawrence citizens a quiet oasis in the middle of downtown.

The Baker Wetlands

These wetlands encompass 927 acres of wildlife habitat, and are home to hundreds of species of birds, animals, and plants. Several trails are open to the public.
